INMM Statement Related to War in Ukraine https://inmm.org/news/599848/ https://inmm.org/news/599848/ The Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) is an international professional society dedicated to the safe handling and storage of nuclear and other radioactive materials.  The INMM has chapters – consisting of members who are valued colleagues – in both Ukraine and Russia, and many of us are worried about family members, friends and colleagues in both nations.  War is antithetical to the INMM’s goal of managing sensitive nuclear material through cooperation and education, and we share the world’s concern for the citizens of both countries who will face adversity in the coming days, weeks and months because of it.

As the world watches the war involve the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhye Nuclear Power facilities, and other locations throughout Ukraine, the INMM would like to stress that the safety and security of nuclear facilities must be protected by all sides in this conflict. We applaud the efforts of Ukraine with respect to nuclear safety, security and safeguards during this conflict and call for continued safety and security of all nuclear facilities in Ukraine as well as the protection of Ukrainian nuclear facilities and nuclear legacy infrastructure, to the extent possible under current conditions.  We appreciate the International Atomic Energy Agency’s intervention.  The 1,000+ members of the INMM extend a sincere offer of support to our colleagues from both nations to determine necessary steps to ensure that these facilities and their associated materials are protected until this conflict has ceased.  We are available to assist in any way we can.

The INMM’s vision statement is, “Global peace, security, and prosperity through the responsible stewardship of nuclear and other radioactive materials.”  Let us all continue to support this vision through our work and our respect for all the world’s people.

Additional information on the evolving situation can be found on the IAEA’s website at https://www.iaea.org/ukraine-conflict.
