9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
$50
Named for George Washington’s estate, Mount Vernon is home to some of the most beautiful and well-preserved 19th century architecture on the East Coast of the United States. The centerpiece of the neighborhood is the area around the Washington Monument – the first monument dedicated to the president — where stately palatial homes face onto four small parks that radiate from the monument. This driving tour includes stories of how international trade, finance, and the railroad industry generated great wealth that ultimately created many of the nation’s foremost cultural institutions: museums, libraries, schools, and more. Highlights will include the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Engineer’s Club located at the Historic Garrett-Jacobs Mansion.
In addition you will be offered a self guided tour of the Walters Art Gallery. The Walters Art Gallery is best known as the home of Philanthropist Henry Walters’ art gallery and collection which, he bequeathed to the city of Baltimore in 1934. Today, the Walters is recognized internationally as one of the finest art museums in America, and houses extensive collections of Western and Eastern art representing 5,000 years of artistic creativity.
